2nd Annual St. Antonio Procession
1PM, SATURDAY, MAY 8, 2010 RAIN OR SHINE
The Fox Point section of Providence, Rhode Island is the second oldest Cape Verdean community in North America after New Bedford, Massachusetts. St. Antonio was Rhode Island’s first Cape Verdean beneficent society, providing health and death benefits to the Cape Verdean immigrants in Fox Point and tending to the social, cultural and spiritual needs of the community. The 2009 75th anniversary parade commemorating the founding of the St. Antonio Association in 1934 was a symbolic return of six generations of Cape Verdeans from Fox Point-including descendants of the founders of the St. Antonio Association-to the community that had been their home.
Panels, films, public events, music, dramatic performances, and non-linear digital installations for “WHOSE HISTORY IS IT? INTERPRETING HISTORY, MEMORY AND CULTURE” begin May 1 at various venues at Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design and the city of Providence, culminating with the 2nd Annual St. Antonio Parade through Fox Point on Saturday, May 8.
